Exercise Education Program

Presently, the VCHC offers 4 Types of Physical Education Programs:

Type A: Free programs held by partner agencies
Type B: Programs held by VCHC under the Health Promotion umbrella
Type C: Programs held by VCHC under the Chronic Disease Prevention and Management program umbrella
Type D: Space requests from community


Type A: FREE CLASSES HELD AT THE VCHC BY PARTNER AGENCIES

Free programs held by partner agencies
Registration Criteria:
These programs are free of cost and can be attended on an ongoing basis.
Participants registered in Type A programs are welcome to attend Type B + C programs.

Program Classes under Type A:
Class A: Light Exercise for Seniors 65+ Years of Age
Day: TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS
Time:Tuesday from 12pm-1pm and Wednesday from 10am-11am
Location: VCHC Suite 106
Date: Ongoing
Program Fee: Free.
Light chair exercises for seniors who are 65 years of age and older. For registration please call Rose from Circle of Care at 905-303-5838 Ext.3156. This program is in partnership with Circle of Care. There will be no classes from August 21-September 1st, 2017. Registration is closed.

Class B: Light Exercise for Seniors 65+ Years of Age
Day: TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS
Time:Tuesday from 1pm-2pm and Friday from 9:30am-10:30am
Location: VCHC Suite 206-CDC Entrance
Date:Starting Ongoing

Breathe Better Level 1 & 2
Day: THURSDAYS
Time: THURSDAYS: Level 1: 10am-11am | Level 2: 11am-12pm
Location: VCHC Suite 206-CDC Entrance
Date:Ongoing
Free exercise class to help you stay healthy, active and independent. Level 1 is low intensity, mostly seated exercises. Level 2 is medium intensity, some standing exercises. Suggested for individuals who have experienced limited activities due to shortness of breath or have mentioned by doctor you are at risk for COPD or CHF. Type B: CLASSES WITHIN THE VCHC HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAM

Programs held by VCHC under the Health Promotion umbrella
Registration Criteria:
Participants registered in Type B programs are welcome to attend Type A + C programs. Participants can attend programs once per week per cycle. Ongoing participation may be permitted, depending on demand i.e. wait list.

Step it Up
Day: THURSDAYS
Time: 6:00pm-7:00pm
Location: VCHC Suite 206-CDC Entrance
Date: Oct. 5, 2017 to Mar. 1, 2018 (No classes on Dec. 28 and Jan. 4)
This class incorporates standing and stepping exercises to push your fitness and confidence to the next level. A variety of strength training equipment is used including dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls and steppers. Cardio machines such as the treadmill, elliptical, rower and recumbent bike are incorporated in the exercise routine. At the end of the program participants will learn safe and proper exercise techniques that can be used towards achieving their personal exercise goals. Program Fee: Free. Total of 20 classes. Total Body Conditioning at Maple Community Centre – Activity Room 5

Mondays, October 2, 2017 – March 12, 2018 (No class: Oct 9, Dec. 25, Jan 1, Feb 19)
Class A: 9:00am-10:00am | Class B: 10:00am-11:00am
Fridays, October 6, 2017 – March 2, 2018 (No class: Dec. 29 & Jan. 5)
Class C: 11:00am-12:00pm
Using dumbbells, resistance bands and your own body weight, this 60 minute total body workout helps participants develop strength, muscular en-durance, flexibility and balance while burning calories! We start with a light warm up and dynamic stretching routine to warm up all the muscle groups. This is followed by a total body circuit that combines cardio and strength training stations that keep you moving and motivated for the next exercise! This is followed by a cool down and static stretching routine. All exercises are performed standing, some seated and/or using a mat. We take water breaks after every circuit. Please bring a water bottle and dumbbells to this class. At the end of the program participants will learn safe and proper exercise techniques that can be used towards achieving their personal exercise goals. Type C: CLASSES WITHIN THE VCHC CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION & MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Energize with Exercise
Day:MONDAYS
Time: 2:00pm-3:00pm
Location: VCHC Suite 206-CDC Entrance
Date: Oct. 2, 2017 – Mar. 12, 2018 (No classes on Oct. 9, Dec. 25, Jan. 1 and Feb. 19)
For individuals who are looking to begin exercising or incorporate light activity in their day with a focus on improving chronic disease management or preventing onset. This 60 minute total body workout develops strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and balance. Participants will use their body weight and/or strength training equipment including resistance bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls and stability balls. Cardio machines such as the treadmill, elliptical, rower and recumbent bike are incorporated in the exercise routine. The instructor will provide modifications for exercises if needed. At the end of the program participants will learn safe and proper exercise techniques that can be used towards achieving their exercise health goals. Total of 20 classes. Mobility and Endurance—For Chronic Disease and Prevention
Day: WEDNESDAYS
Time: 6:30pm-7:30pm
Location: VCHC Suite 206-CDC Entrance
Date: Oct. 4, 2017 – Feb. 28, 2018 (No classes on Dec. 27 and Jan. 3)
This program is great for participants who are simply seeking to move better with a focus on improving chronic disease management or preventing onset. Participants will improve joint mobility, relieve muscle tension, manage and/or prevent pain and injury. This class integrates a structured dynamic warm up, mobility drills using body weight, resistance bands and mats, as well as static stretching. A meditation/relaxation component and light cardio exercises are also incorporated. At the end of the program participants will learn safe and proper exercise techniques that can be used towards achieving their personal exercise goals. Water breaks are encouraged after every circuit. Please bring a water bottle. Instructor will provide modifications for exercises if needed. Mindfulness, Stress Reduction and Coping Skills Group
Day: THURSDAY
Time: 9:00am-10:30am

Through education and training, participants will be able to learn ways to better manage their conditions physically, psychologically and socially, with less stress, more internal control and joy. Tai Chi for Health
Day: FRIDAYS
Time: 9:00am – 10:30am
Location: VCHC Suite 206-CDC Entrance
Date: Oct. 6, 2017 – Mar. 2 ,2018 (No class: Dec. 29 and Jan 5)
Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for health of mind and body. The Tai Chi for Health program is easy-to-learn, safe, and, as shown by scientific studies, effective. The classes are recommended for people who want to improve their balance, coordination and harmonize the body and mind. Great for individuals who want to improve management of chronic disease or prevent onset. Program Fee: Free. Total of 20 classes. Type D: FREE SPACE

The VCHC will consider requests for free space for group activities from the community. A formal agreement with the group will be signed to clarify roles and responsibilities.


HOW TO REGISTER FOR FALL 2017 PROGRAMS:
1. Call the VCHC at 905-303-8490 Ext. 171 as of August 22, 2017 to register for fall and winter exercise education programs
2. Participants will be screened for eligibility, i.e. age of participant and program of interest.
3. Eligible participants will be invited to registration.
4. At registration, participants will: a) be screened by a Registered Kinesiologist to ensure participant is cleared for group exercise; b) complete registration forms.
